Goodbye year 3, hello year 4

I'm back from my exchange in UK and god it was the most amazing experience I've ever had. I've toured around Europe, UK and Ireland with many different friends that I've made and grown to love during my exchange days. I'm extremely thankful for the memories I've made and I'll treasure them forever till the day I die. For the people wondering if it's worth it to go for an exchange, I strongly recommend y'all to go if you can afford it.
I think traveling so much during my exchange kind of woke the inner traveler in me. Ever since I came back to SG, all I've wanted to do is to travel. Hence the impromptu Korea trip with Lexin to visit sweetheart on her exchange. And that strong urge to go to HK to eat :(

Anyways, it's the summer break now and i have yet to find a single job sigh. I have given up on looking for one already, since its already almost July. I shall just stay home and watch my HK dramas.

As for academics wise, I'd managed to get the results that i expected. The only problem now is maintaining that second uppers in my upcoming last semester. I'm gonna have to work like mad to maintain it :( First class is definitely out of the question. Like, how does one even get first class?!

It's also two more days before I get to see Justin! He's finally coming back for a few months from the UK and i can't wait to meet him :) LDR is hard, but i guess it makes you treasure the person even more since I only get to see him once a year. However, weekly skype sessions helps. (thank you to whoever created Skype) Maybe that's why I'm in such a happy mood these few days HAHA.

Okay i think it's about time I ended this post (idk what to type anymore). I'll probably blog again next year or whenever i remember that my blog exists. I'm sorry that this blog has been so neglected. I only write these posts so that I can get to read them in the future and reminisce about my past.

Everything's finally legal!

I'm proud to announce that I'm officially an adult at long last! I'm free to do whatever I want with no legal consequences. My 21st birthday has just passed 4 days ago and I'm really thankful for everyone's birthday wishes (I always feel so loved on my birthdays). I never regretted my decision of not having a birthday party, as I've actually enjoyed spending 12Aug15 with my choir friends #pollymollyhollyjolly (I'm polly btw), having our breakfast togethert, performing for welcome week for the final time together, and then singing/rapping our hearts out in kbox (plus I can rap that korean song pretty well now thanks to Sher-yin's audios). The only downside was that I fell sick immediately when I reached home after the kbox session. I had flu and a horrible headache. It was so bad that I couldn't even get out of bed the next day. Nevertheless,  it was a day well spent.

Today, however, was a different story. I don't know if I'm just plain clumsy or what. At work today, I accidentally dropped a whole cup of iced latte onto the floor. A while later, I accidentally made an extra waffle when there were no orders for waffles. I've never been so blur at work before.  I blame it on the crazy preparations for my exchange and europe trip. There's only one week left before I fly of and I realised that I still have a lot of things to do. Things like printing multiple copies of important documents, submitting forms, registering with MFA, getting bank statements, packing my luggage, buying stuff, and so much more. Just thinking about it gives me a headache. But I can't continue being lazy and drag this on any longer. I shall start packing tomorrow. I must.

Goodnight guys! Its time to "rest my weary head upon my warm and waiting bed' (I just took that from a choir song hahahaha). Okay I'll stop being lame now.

Finally an update on my life :)

More than a year has passed since my last blog post and so many things happened in this one year. Academically, I have done well enough for the previous 2 semesters to pull my cGPA back up and that goal of getting second uppers became a lot more reachable. Even though people always say that GPA isn't that important, I disagree. If I hadn't been able to pull my GPA back up, I would not even be able to go on an exchange. I have worked my ass off for that 2 sems in order for me to qualify for that dream exchange.

Since we're on the topic of exchange, I managed to enter Cardiff University to study for one semester from Sept15 to Jan16. I'm sooooooooo excited! To those thinking of going for exchange, my advice would be to really do your research properly, else you'd end up like me, having so much trouble with my application process. Lessons over at Cardiff actually starts on the 28Sept and Orientation starts on  21Sept. I've decided to travel around Europe with 2 other girls for 3 weeks before going to school. I'll try to blog on my travels more often during that period :)

Since travelling require money, I wanted to work as much as possible during the hols. I've actually taken up a lot of short term event jobs, like giving out samples for Khiels, counting human traffic for a research company, ushering for SMU commencement and more recently, working at 23 Jumpin as a part-time service crew. Working at 23 Jumpin for the past 2 months was actually fun (except the horrible unreasonable customers), and I love the family-ish atmosphere there. The people there are just so kind, always offering me food. I hope that I'll still be able to work here when Im back from the UK. Many new friendships were made through these part-time jobs and I've experienced so so much. I'll never trade them with anything else in the world (except maybe a lifetime supply of ice cream).

It's going to be National day soon, which also means that my 21st birthday is coming up. I've decided not to throw a party because I really needed the money for my Europe trip/UK exchange. Also, I never quite liked the idea of celebrating birthdays. I mean, its technically just another day of your life. I'm not someone who enjoys being in the spotlight. I don't particularly enjoy the awkward moment of not knowing what to do when people are singing the birthday song (unless I'm the one singing). On a side note, I have a choir performance in school on that big day. It'll probably be the last choir performance in my entire life. Cries.

I'll stop blogging here for now and go back to learning how to sing 4minute's Crazy (thanks Sher-yin for teaching me Korean hehe). I'll definitely be back to blog soon and maybe i'll even post a vlog here! :)

P.S. Did you notice I've changed my style of blogging? I didn't really liked my old style of writing so I've changed it. Hopefully for the better.

Anticipating SBS FOC 14

Can you believe that I've been so busy these few days that i totally forgot my blog existed?
Urgh. Busy life.
Okay.
Here's an update from the previous post.

So ran for the position of logistics head in Choir.
And i got it! *does the happy dance*
But, with the position also comes the responsibility.
This just meant that I had to worry about more stuff than usual.
But im pretty sure i can handle whatever that comes my way :)

Academic wise,
I did horribly for sem2,
and i dont really know why.
Did i not study hard enough?
The results totally pulled my sem1's results down by quite a lot.
Really worried that if this continues,
i wouldnt be able to go for the exchange that i've been dreaming about for so long.
The amount of stress here is plain crazy.
Its so competitive among the students that im starting to wish that i didnt study in Singapore.
URGH.

Also, i tried making Durian Panna Cotta and Durian Lava Cake in the previous few days.
Why all the durian you might ask.
It's all thanks to my dad who kept bugging me to do a durian/mango dessert.
For the Lava Cake, i couldnt find a single recipe online AT ALL.
Hasn't anyone attempted making it?
Or at least thought about it?
All i could find was recipes of Chocolate Lava Cakes.
It was then i decided to be creative and modify the Chocolate Lava Cake recipe into a Durian one.
Surprisingly it WORKED although it isn't as good as the chocolate one.
Here's the lava cake:

And as for the Panna Cotta, i swear it was the best thing i've ever tasted.
It is an Italian dessert that is utterly silky smooth like tofu and just melts in your mouth.
I will definitely make more of these in the future, maybe experimenting with other flavors like lychee.
Ooh cant wait!
And here's the Durian Panna Cotta:

And nowwwww, back to the main topic: SBS FOC14!
Senior's camp was actually fun, but tiring.
Didnt realise that proggies had so many things to do.
Went for pre-camp tdy,
and i only managed to catch a glimpse of the freshies.
Cant actually believe that im not a freshie anymore :/
So for tdy, proggies had briefing, got camp shirts, and cut more TRASHBAGS.
I swear the amount of trashbags that we need to cut is never ending.
Thank god we finally finished it tdy!
I dont think i can take anymore trashbag cutting.
Actual camp's in 2 days and i really hope all the effort that the proggies put in will pay off.
Till next time! :)

Recess Week

Wow.
It seems that time really flies huh.
The first sem's over and its already the middle of the second sem.
Time to start mugging like a madwomen again :(
It is impt that i need to do well to pull my GPA up.
Speaking of GPA, i only got a second lower last sem.
Kinda had mixed feelings for that one.
On one hand, i was glad that i didnt fail anything (i sort of expected myself to fail biophys)
But on the other hand, it was so close to my dream of second uppers.
Its gonna be so hard to beat my previous GPA
as i have extra modules and they're all harder compared to last sem.
After blogging imma go back to studying. Cant afford to not do well.

Well besides studying, i have other commitments in school too. Like DUHH.
I will die if all I do is just study.
Ha.
So, i joined SBS's FOC 14 as a proggie!
Out of the different types of activites that we're supposed to plan, i chose Fright Night HEHEHE
I have always wanted to go behind the scenes of a haunted hse :))))
So far planning's going well and i cant wait for this sem to be over and SBS FOC to start!

Other than FOC, i also joined the NTU CAC Choir :)
I really love the people there and its funnnn :)
Going for choir practices sort of reduces my stress level.
The concert (which was AWESOME) was recently over.
Received so much love on that day :')
It left me feeling bittersweet. No more choir pracs till next sem *cries* :'(
Now that the comm is stepping down, im thinking of running for one of the positions in the main comm.
But i really dislike interviews, so IDK. Shld I or shld I not.

School life aside,
I attempted macarons but failed sigh.
So i made cupcakes instead. (cuz i need to use up the filling that was meant for the macarons)
TAADAA!

 Raspberry Mascarpone Cupcakes

Lemon Meringue Cupcakes

Okay i really need to get back to the recorded lectures.
Will blog again whenever i feel like it :)

The start of school.

Hello guys, I'm finally blogging again.
It has been a crazy week
Ever since sch started.
And I was so busy trying
to make some sense out of everything.
I think that I'm beginning to settle in.
Like finally.
Tdy was the start of the tutorials.
Not bad, it's kinda like what I expected.
Made some new.... Acquaintances?
Tdy was the first day of French lesson too!
At first, I totally didn't understand what
the tutor was saying,
Cuz she was like teaching French in FRENCH.
But it wasn't long before I caught up
on what she was teaching and enjoyed myself tremendously.
I'm starting to develop a liking for French!
Also, I went for the choir audition aft sch tdy.
And let me say,
It was HORRIBLE.
I don't know why, but I sounded like a horse trying to sing.
My voice was just.... Gone.
And the fact that the conductor
asked me to sing weird notes
Made it so much harder.
I feel like Ariel the mermaid,
after she had her voice taken away by that evil thing.
Okay I don't know what's the name of the evil thing.
Is it Ursula?
I think so.
Yea.
Okay.
The conductor even asked,
'What happened to your voice?' :(

Byes for now,
I'll find time to blog again.

Cheese anyone?

So i made a cheesecake 2 days ago.
It was the best recipe i've ever found on the internet!
At first, when i took the cake out of the oven,
i was worried that it would not taste nice
as it looked uncook (the whole cake was jiggly)
and it stinks of sourcream.
I thought that i had added too much sourcrream :X
Here's the cheesecake just out of the oven:

Looks so pretty right??
I was fortunate to not have any cracks on the cake.
okay. so aft making the cheesecake,
i made the blueberry sauce.
it also stank, probably due to the cornstarch.

thus on the next day,
i prepared for the worst-an awful tasting cheesecake.
however, when i took the cake and sauce out of the fridge,
they didnt stink anymore.
instead, there was this smell of cheesecake.
it was the first sign of hope.
i cut out a slice and topped it with the sauce.

took the first bite.
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
IT WAS DELICIOUS.
tasted as though i bought the cake from a bakery outside.
i was in shock,
but at the same time enjoying the cake.
since it was so successful,
im planning to sell them too!
YAY!
KAY IM GONNA STOP BLOGGING ABT MY BAKING ADVENTURES.

Ytd, i went expo with jh
popular saleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :)
the books were freakin cheap!
i bought 5 books,
with the total cost amounting to only $21.
The books there ranged from $2 - $10.
i even saw a cookbook that originally costs $33+,
but was reduced to $10 in the sale.
More than 50% off.
What great deals!
Aft book shopping,
we went bugis to shop.
There were a lot of nice clothes that i wanted to buy,
but each time i buy something,
i always felt guilty afterwards for spending money.
In the end,
i only bought a $5 top.
it was just 5 bucks.
so i thought, what the heck.
Just buy it.
it was an awesome day! :)
will blog soon!

Too lazy. and troublesome.
My sis's band dinner is tmr!
i've just baked a batch of cupcakes,
ready to be frosted tmr.
i have to say though,
it wasnt as great as the previous batch i made.

It may seem a little confusing to some ppl tho :X
im just starting out, so i guess i cant price the cakes too high.
i'll feel guilty if i charge too much,
esp if they're my friends.
ohwell. guess i'll just increase the price as time goes by.
im just afraid tt i dont have the time to bake anymore
when sch starts.
Customised fondant cakes sold in SG are wayyyyyy expensive.
The cheapest i could find was 85 bucks ONWARDS.
I dont think i could charge these prices.
Most people who order form me are students afterall.
ohwell.
what can i do?
i found this online:

This is soooooo freakin true!
Custom cakes do NOT come cheap
and not everyone can afford it.
I know im selling myself short,
but i just cant charge so much!
i'll just take this as something to pass time.

cakes aside,
im gg back to sch with jo and lx to collect our SGC coming wed!
ooooooo so excited

Imagine working alongside ur dad!
It would be so awkard for me :O

Selling cakes!

hi guys,
i realised that i couldnt wait
to start selling cakes/cupcakes
and earn some money back.
Really.
need to start selling stuff before school opens
cuz i'll be busy like hell again.
okay.
i made simple vanilla cupcakes with lemon buttercream
frm an online recipe.
For a taste test.
tasted not bad,
so im gonna go full steam ahead
for my sis's order of 32 cupcakes for her band dinner.
(she didnt have to pay, of course ;D)
The cupcakes i made ytd:

Lemon buttercream vanilla cupcakes!
haha i anyhow did the frosting though.
i very much prefer decorating with fondant rather than frosting :X
Dont really like piping bleh.

oh, and since im gonna sell cakes,
(fondant mainly)
i've decided to name it 'ylcakes'.
couldnt think of a better name :)
and here are some logo ideas that i like,
but cant seem to settle for one:

yep. thats all!
i know its a lot of logos, but
i really cant decideeeeee helppp :'(
all so prettehhh.
to anyone of you out there reading this blog who are interested,
for orders and enquiries please email me at:
ylcakes@hotmail.com
Thank you for the support!
(See i even created an alias email add for this)

so aft the band dinner batch of cupcakes,
my sis wanted me to make
fondant cupcakes for her friend's bdae.
(i really should start charging her right.)
thought of making chocolate cupcakes
with cream cheese frosting.
Never made cream cheese frosting before.
hmm. fingers crossed!
hope all goes well :)

kay i need to go,
time for my jog/run.
byeeeeeeeeeeee :)

Cakeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I did my first ever fondant cake ytd!
took me half a day to make it.
Started around 15.30, and ended at abt 21.30.
It turned out to be really pretty,
although there were a few flaws in the fondant.
well, practice makes perfect :)
gonna practice it
till its flawless.
Then, i can start selling them :)
(BTW i have never taken any kind of cooking/baking class before)

To make a cake like this,
here's what i did:
First, i used the cake mix and other ingredients to bake the cake.
While its in the oven,
I prepared the chocolate buttercream icing.
I did it according to the recipe i found online
but it turned out to be quite dry and not as creamy as i expected.
Thus i modified it a little by adding 2 tbsp more of milk
and an extra small slice of butter.
The icing turned out to be not bad and quite delicious actually :)
When the cake is done,
i let it cool for abt 15 mins. (cuz its too hot to touch :O)
When its cooled enough,
i used a long bread knife to first cut off the crown of the cake.
(Its like a dome shaped thing.)
Then, i cut the cake into half horizontally
and applied chocolate buttercream frosting in between the layers,
the top and side of the cake.
This is what it looks like after crumbcoating it:

Yea i know, its my first try, and i couldnt seem to make it smooth :'(
Aft crumbcoating, its fondant time!!
I prepared these a day before i made the cake:

i was experimenting with the colors,
and realised tt the orange balls and pink ribbons
were a few shades lighter than what i wanted.
Learnt tt i needed to spam coloring to get a darker shade of color :/

anyways. for the fondant that covers the cake,
i couldnt make up my mind what color to use.
In the end, green was randomly chosen.
even the amt of green colouring i used was random. Haha.
It was difficult to put the fondant on the cake.
i tried my best, but it still ended up with a few flaws.
And finally, presenting to you,
my first homade mmf chocolate cake!

Its looks so pretty in this picture! :DDD
The flaws have either been covered up by the balls at the bottom,
or they cant be seen by this angle. hehe.
But flaws or not, im still proud of myself for making something like this.
I have never in my life dreamed that i could make a cake like this.

Oh, and here's the inside of the cake:

My baking life aside,
my life is actually boring.
I either watch TV, use the com, or go out with friends.
Although i keep complaining abt being bored at home,
i know that when sch starts,
I would wish that i be bored, rather than studying my ass off.
It was exactly what i felt when JC life started,
aft months of resting at home.
ohwell.
Life's like that.

Start of something newwww.

First i gotta say,
NUS rejected meeeeeeeeee.
Like finally.
sorta expected it.
waited for so damn long for that letter,
i was beginning to think that they forgot abt me.
HMPH.

Anyway,
i was really starting to rot at home.
so i've decided to pick up a new hobby.
This idea came to me when i had
no idea what birthday present to give my friend.
Then i thought, well, i could bake a cake.
and the more i thought of it, the more excited i became.
thus,
im gonna bake fondant cakes,
as the fondant really fascinates me.
It looks damn fun :)))
did extensive research ytd on fondant related stuff
and i've officially made up my mind to invest in them.
gonna make it a long term hobby.
if all turns out well for the 1st and 2nd tries,
i may even try selling them :)
went to phoon huat in bradell tdy.
bought tons of cake decor stuff.
(They are freakin ex, i must add.)
below are the items that i bought tdy:

1. Wilton 6inch X 3inch Cake tin @ $19.50

2. Wilton Fondant large rolling pin @ $32.00

3. Wilton Roll-and-cut mat @ $13.90

4. Wilton Gumtex @ $11.50

5. Wilton Fondant smoother @ $8.20

6. Wilton Set of 8 fondant colorings @ $15.90

7. Wilton Set of 3 flower cutters @ $4.20

8. Pack of 5 8inch Cake base @ $2.30

9. Pack of 5 8X8X4inch  cake boxes @ $2.20

10. 2 Packs of mini marshmallows @ $2.10 each
(To make MMF)

I wanted a Cake leveller too, but they dont have it in stock :(
I've spent more than a hundred dollars in total.
Oh well. I'll just take it as a long term investment of some sort.

As im only gonna concentrate on the deco mainly,
I've decided to use cake mix
to save myself the trouble of starting from scratch.
(Told you im lazy :X)

SO, this is it!
cant wait to start making my marshmallow fondant!!
Hopefully my first ever fondant chocolate cake will taste just fine :D

Cake in a cup!

Hellooooooo!
Time really flies uh.
Its already May.

In these few days,
i've been trying to make cake in a cup!
its easy, convenient, and really fun!
The first time i tried it,
the cake tasted just really really dry.
and so, i've been experimenting around with
different amounts of ingredients.
to my delight, i found one online
that taste awesome and much more moist :)

Here's the recipe:

4 tablespoons self-raising flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons melted butter or oil
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon chocolate chips
1 large mug

Preparation method
  1.  Add dry ingredients to the mug, and mix well.
  2. Crack an egg and add it to your mug. Be sure to mix it well to avoid and pockets of flour in the corner. Pour in the milk, oil and chips, and mix well. Add the vanilla extract.
  3. Pop your mug into the microwave for 3 mins on max power. Wait until the cake stops rising, and sets in the mug.
  4. If necessary, run a knife around the sides of the mug, andtip the still warm cake out of the mug and onto a saucer.
  5. For the topping, u can actually decorate it anyway u want! For me, i sprinkled some icing sugar on the cake using a sieve and some colored balls thing. (idk what they're called)

I would recommend adding more sugar,
as it may taste a lil bitter :)
Try it!
Its awesome, esp for lazy ppl like me. HEH.

Kayy i shall go watch my cantonese drama now :)
Will blog again!

Im drowning in Happiness. Literally :)

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!
I received a letter frm NTU
saying tt i've managed to get in!
Got accepted into biological sciences.
my 1ST choice wheeeeeeee!
im so happy(and a little relieved),
that no words could desribe what im feeling right now.
I used to worry that i wont be able to get into
either one of the Unis.
Cuz the competition here is reeeeeeally high.
Now awaiting for NUS's letter.
No matter what the outcome is,
i think im gonna choose NTU.
Altho NUS is more well knowned,
the amount of competition there is probably
